Growing up in Minnesota and living in Wisconsin and Texas, Kelly experienced just about every kind of weather extreme — from blizzards and 70 below zero wind chills in the winter to severe weather and temperatures in the triple digits during the summer. Extreme weather, such as tornadoes and blizzards, sparked his interest in meteorology when he was young. But as Kelly got older, he became intrigued with the science of weather forecasting.
After receiving his degree from the University of
Wisconsin, Kelly started his career forecasting for the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He started television in Albuquerque. He also worked in Eau Claire and Madison, Wisconsin. When Kelly was ready for warmer weather, he moved to Austin, Texas for 16 years where he worked at several different stations in the capital city.
Kelly loves being outdoors. He’s also an avid bicyclist who you may see on his bike around Eau Claire on just about any day. During the summer of 2013, Kelly rode his bicycle from Austin, Texas to his hometown in Minnesota. Kelly also plays a lot of two-on-two sand volleyball.
